MARIANNA -
Fire
departments from Marianna, Hughes, Moro and Barton battled an
agricultural chemical fire Friday afternoon that destroyed a building at
the Jimmy Sanders, Inc. operation west of the town.
Marianna
Fire Chief Rodney Herndon reported Monday that fire erupted about 3 p.m.
Friday inside a shop at the Jimmy Sanders operation on U.S. Highway 79
west of Marianna causing a wall to collapse and destroying chemicals
within the structure.
=93Th
e fire started in the attic and spread quickly,=94 Herndon said. =93One
of the employees told us he witnessed =91a ball of fire=92 falling from
the ceiling and when he turned around the whole wall was on fire and
starting to collapse.=94
Herndon
said a Sanders employee attempted to extinguish the fire before a call
was made to the MFD.
Fire units from Hughes, Barton and Moro were called,
Herndon said. Helena-West Helena Assistant Fire Chief Travis Williams
drove to Marianna to be on standby, Herndon said.
Herndon
said the firefighters protected chemicals stored in a separate shed. A
backhoe was deployed to keep the chemicals from running off into
ditches.
=93We knew it was supposed to rain Saturday and we
wanted to keep the ag chemicals from getting into the ditches and float
toward town,=94 Herndon said.
An air quality team from Little Rock was in Marianna
Monday monitored the scene for possible chemical contamination, Herndon
said.
The fire call was one of three handled by the Marianna
Fire Department over the weekend, Herndon said.
=93We had
just responded to a house fire on (Arkansas) Highway 1 south (of
Marianna) when we got the call to Sanders,=94 Herndon said. The house
was heavily damaged by fire, he said.
MFD
responded to a house fire Saturday night on Lucille Street, Herndon
said. Cause of that fire that heavily damaged the residence is still
unknown, Herndon said.
