That works great, except for certain water soluble materials. (THF and PEG ethers are examples.) For those items, you can just put the KI and starch solution on some filter paper, mostly dry it, and then add the material. The reaction requires water, so don't overdry it. If you don't want to fool around with making your own, you can buy the test strips from Sigma-Aldrich.
