TNN 16 November 2009, 06:16am IST

JAIPUR: Three persons, including a child were killed and five others injured in an explosion at a vacant plot where scrap was being melted in
Gadia Lohar ki Dhuni village in Kota on Sunday morning.

According to sources, Munna Lohar, a blacksmith, and his son Kamal (8) were melting scrap when the blast occurred. Both Munna and Kamal, and a scrap dealer Giriraj Meena, who supplied them the items, were rushed to MBS Hospital in the city where they were declared brought dead. Five passersby, including four children, sustained injuries.

ASP, Kota, Laxman Gaur said the victims belonged to a nomadic community, who deal in scrap. A case has been registered and an investigation is on. The police are also trying to find out as from whom the scrap dealer got the explosives, he said.

Meanwhile, a team of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) collected samples from the spot.

The scrap dealer was unaware of the explosives present in the scrap. Otherwise, he would have not given it directly for melting, said an official. Meanwhile, the police have sealed the whole area to prevent any untoward incident.

MLA from Ladpura, Bhawani Singh Rajawat, who reached the spot soon after the incident, said it was an unfortunate incident as three members of a poor family were killed. =93It was a matter of concern for people of Kota as from where the explosives reached the scrap dealer,=94 he said.

A similar incident occurred at a scrap factory in Vishwakarma area of Jaipur on Septmeber 13, in which three persons died and three others sustained serious injuries. The explosion occurred when the workers were trying to hammer out iron from a live shell.
