90-minute presentation will look at how OSHA=92s NPRM on the GHS could
impact the classification of chemicals, Safety Data Sheets and product
labels. Practical effects on SDSs and labels and implications for U.S.
hazard communication practices will be highlighted.
Participants should have a familiarity with the OSHA and GHS hazard
communication requirements.

About the
Speakers:
Jennifer Silk is retired from the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) where she was the
Deputy Director of Standards and Guidance. Jennifer was the team leader
for development of the original Hazard Communication Standard. She
represented the US Government in negotiations to develop the Globally
Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, chaired
the international coordinating group that managed development of the
GHS, and served as the US expert to the United Nations Subcommittee of
Experts on the GHS. She is now a consultant to OSHA, and a Training
Advisor to the United Nations Institute of Training and Research on GHS
issues. Jennifer was on the Board of Directors for SCHC for many years,
and as served as President and Chair of the Board.
Michele R.
Sullivan, Ph.D. is a recognized expert in domestic and international
hazard communication and author of MSDS and GHS Guidance Manuals. She
testified as an expert witness at the Senate Subcommittee hearing on
=93Hazard Communication in the Workplace=94. Dr. Sullivan participated
in the ANSI Z400.1 MSDS and Z129.1 Labeling Standards development and
training.
She participated on the NACOSH Hazard
Communication Work Group that advised OSHA about 29 CFR 1910.1200, the
Hazard Communication Standard. In the transportation area her experience
includes: participation at the United Nations Committee of Experts on
the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UNCETDG); a rapporteur for the Ottawa
meeting on the Harmonization of Physical Hazards.
Michele
developed GHS situational analyses for USA regulations and designed GHS
training for Asia-Pacific countries. Her GHS activities include:
industry member of the USA delegation to the Earth Summit
preconferences, the IOMC Coordinating Group on the Harmonization of
Chemical Classification Systems, the OECD Task Force on the
Harmonization of Classification and Labeling and the ILO Working Group
for the Harmonization of Chemical Hazard Communication. She is listed on
the UN Roster of GHS Experts.
Her professional activities
are related to SCHC: recipient of the SCHC Distinguished Lecturer Award
for outstanding contributions to the field of hazard communication; a
SCHC Board Member and former Chairwoman & President of SCHC;
professional development trainer and HAZCOM 101 director.
Dr.
Sullivan received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of
Virginia and her BA in chemistry from Newton College of the Sacred
Heart.
