Garner The Atlanta Journal-Constitution 6:13 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2009 Three people were taken to a hospital Thursday night after a hazardous chemical spill at Georgia Tech, officials said. A HAZ-MAT team was able to neutralize the spill of the dangerous chemical sometime after 9 p.m., Atlanta Fire spokesman Capt. Bill May said. The building is expected to reopen Friday morning. Crews were called to 801 Atlantic Drive around 7:10 p.m. after the spill of reportedly corrosive chemicals, officials said. The building, which houses part of the College of Computing and several science and engineering labs, was evacuated with no reported injuries, May said. Three people, however, were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for observation, Georgia Tech spokesman Matt Nagel said. Police told WAGA-TV the chemicals involved were nitric acid and potassium cyanide. Along with the Atlanta Fire and Rescue HAZ-MAT team, Georgia Tech police and the school's Environmental Health and Safety units helped with the incident, Nagel said. It is unclear how the spill happened, but the HAZ-MAT team will be investigating, May said. === 3 Treated After Chemical Spill At Ga. Channel 2 Action News reporter Eric Philips spoke with investigators at the scene, who told him that the spill occurred in the College of Computing building on Atlantic Drive. Investigators said two chemicals came into contact inside a lab. =93Three grad students were transported to Grady Hospital for observation. The incident is under investigation," said Matt Nagel, spokesman for the Georgia Institute of Technology. Officials said hazardous materials teams entered the building in special suits. Nagel said a full cleanup was under way Thursday night and that the building is scheduled to reopen Friday morning. No word on what chemicals were involved in the incident.
