IPFW = Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090908/NEWS02/ 909080337/1001 FORT WAYNE, Ind. Article published Sep 8, 2009 Two students injured in flash fire at IPFW lab A dental-research study at IPFW turned dangerous Tuesday morning when two students were injured in an ethanol flash fire. The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to a third-floor biology laboratory around 11:45 a.m. where they found one female student with first- and second-degree burns on her face and hands and a male student, who grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. He was treated at the scene for minor burns to his arm and leg. Spokeswoman Susan Alderman said the woman was taken to St. Joseph Hospital=92s burn unit. Other students were in the lab at the time, Alderman said, but no one else was injured. The lab received minor damage. Alderman said the woman was working on a dental study, not associated with IPFW, at the time of the fire. She did not know what that experiment included. The fire department said chemicals being used in the experiment caused the fire, according to a news release.
