We are a large commercial lab who is in the process of implementing ISO 14001. Part of this effort is environmental sustainability, with an emphasis on "green" chemistry. For us environmental sustainability is the application or implementation of processes or procedures that allow for improving or protecting the ecosystem. This type of "green" thinking has enabled us to reduce or replace chemicals that otherwise have to be treated or disposed of via haz waste. The idea of sustainability is, in my opinion, a revamp of "reduce, reuse and recycle". It just implies a more formal approach with deeper thinking into long term impact as related to the overall ecosystem. This might turn out to be an interesting discussion, but can someone please CONCISELY DEFINE what sustainability really means? It's a nice word and all, but I think we're on the brink of "feel-good" EH&S.
