We really need to hear from all academic list participants about this subject. The discussion of glove use, especially on the philosophical level, brings forward the reality of glove selection, the training needed for glove selection and care, and the variety of chemicals (many of which are not included in the glove manufactures charts) encountered during a single experiment in undergraduate organic chemistry. Only Silver Shield (type of) gloves would protect the students from everything they are likely to encounter. So we have philosophical questions: Gloves vs. no gloves Incorrect gloves vs. no gloves Protection from incidental exposure vs. accidental exposure Learning correct glove selection vs. creation of a culture where exam gloves are the norm Cost of gloves vs. potential litigation And we have practical questions: What glove or gloves are appropriate, practical to use, affordable for the week to week variations found in our undergraduate organic chemistry labs? What do you do in your undergraduate organic labs about gloves?
