Hi Suzanne, Ed and all: I was a research chemist at duPont befo
re
moving to academia. At duPont, safety was a BIG item in all reviews.
Violations would impact raises and promotions. Failure to shape up
quickly
would lead to the famous "pink slip", even for guys. When I moved to
academia, my duPont background meant becoming Chair of the Safety
Committee. First problem - the Dept Chair did not wear safety glasse
s in
the lab! Safety in academia is a major weakness. Promotions ev
aluate
Research, Teaching and Public Service. Safety should be included und
er
Teaching - our students respond to what we do and require. This shou
ld be
enforced from the President's office, especially in view of liability
concerns. In case you have not noticed, the U.S. has an oversupply
of
lawyers! Al Denio
