Hi Barbara,
I used to think that mouth pipetting was no longer an issue until I started
asking about it. In a past life, I trained all new researchers for a large
Pfarmaceutical research facility. During lab safety training sessions I as
ked if anyone had been trained in mouth pipetting when we got to that part-
I was regularly shocked to find that researchers from reputable universiti
es indicated that they were still learning to mouth pipette..... The last t
ime I did this training was less than 5 years ago.

Based on the information provided by researchers I decided not to remove th
e 'don't mouth pipette' item from our short list of "Do not..." rules.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Pipetting rule

Colleagues,

During our annual review of safety rules and printed mataerials, one of my
young colleagues asked me if it is still necessary to include the rule "Nev
er pipet by mouth." She has never seen it done, and couldn't imagine anyone
who would EVER think of doing it. I guess I could ask the same about the "
No eating or drinking" rule.

Any thoughts?
