We had the high haz team (basically the bomb squad - Kevlar and riot helmets with remote detonating devices) come in for some old peroxides and shock sensitives=85$3500. They remotely opened 10 bottles, neutralized them, and gave them back to us to dispose of. The issue here is that you need to check with your waste disposal company on what they require as far as age of certain chemicals. Our disposal company will not take peroxide forming chemicals over 1 year old, but certain chemists with the company that transport are also on the high haz team and have said, =93it=92s okay. They do this because=85=94 and we know it=92s because of money. Take care with how much you =93hydrate=94 the container. Remember that dilution is a form of treatment, and once you make the determination that the picric acid is waste, RCRA steps in. Halim A.
