Subject: Ideas on how to neutralize sodium amalgam for disposal

Debbie,
Several years ago we had to decommission 12 labs under the care of a
retiring German organo metallic synthetic researcher. The faculty and
staff were proactive and worked with us for over a year to safely shut
down 30 plus years of stuff created by this research group. They had
several large (4 L) NaK stills. We found a well written procedure for
sodium drying stills taken from the University of Guelph's website We
peer reviewed the procedure with in house organo metal faculty modified
to fit NaK. I can send the procedure directly if your interested. We did
modify these procedures as we developed some expertise with Nak. I can
also add some observations that were just part of the learning process.
It can be done safely with some precautions. Feel free to contact me for
any of this information.
Jim
