ACN is a byproduct of acrylamide manufacture. Demand is down due to the housing mess. There are no pla nts that specifically make it, and most of the acrylamide plants just burn it off. Maybe they are rethinking their handling of the waste stream.
Re the FDA comment, we and many others are using methanol in place particularly for preparative work.

Acetonitrile
If you are not already an acetonitrile customer, no
vendoers will accept orders for that material anymore. They are opera
ting
on a quota system now, with each customer being issued a quota'd amount equ
al
to their purchasing history.
Does anyone have any news about when the plant that makes the acetonitrile will come back online?
What about any news from the FDA? Are they entertaining alternatives for acetonitrile for use in submitted and approved test methods?
Seems
to me that whoever comes up with a workable alternative solvent will defini
tely
have more than their 15 minutes of fame!
