Dear DCHAS list members, I am a freelance reporter working on a story about lab safety for Nature Jobs (http://www.nature.com/naturejobs/news/index.html). My article is about the hazards that might not be obvious to the average lab worker. Scientists know, or course, that needles are sharp and radiation is not good for you--but other dangers might not be at the top of one's mind. For example, animal researchers may be surprised when they develop an allergy to their research subjects. I am interested in other lab-based allergies and chemical sensitivities as well, and the potential dangers of working with new kinds of chemicals. I am writing to ask if you have any anecdotes or stories related to these kinds of hazards that might not be on a lab worker's radar that you would share with me.
