Ralph et al,

Please note that the ISEA/ANSI Z358.1 Standard is in the process of
being revised. The current draft (December 2008) states under section
5.5.2: "Plumbed eyewashes shall be activated weekly for a period long
enough to verify operation and ensure that flushing fluid is
available. (See Appendix B7)."

The current draft of Appendix B7 reads: "Weekly Activation for
Plumbed Equipment"
"The intent of the weekly activation to be conducted on plumbed
emergency equipment is to ensure that there is a flushing fluid supply
at the head of the device and to clear the supply line of any sediment
build-up that could prevent fluid from being delivered to the head of
the device and minimize microbial contamination due to sitting water.
The duration of this test is dependent on the volume of water
contained in the unit itself and all sections of pipework that do not
form part of a constant circulation system (also known as "dead leg"
portions). Water in these sections is static until a flow is
activated by opening a valve. The goal is to flush out stagnant water
in the dead leg completely. Where mixing valves are used, both the
hot water and cold water supplies to the valve must be considered."

This revision is still in progress, and those of us on the Revision
Committee will have a teleconference next week. My suggestion is to
do weekly activation of all plumbed emergency eyewash equipment and I
encourage all D-CHAS members who have responsibility for such
equipment to obtain and follow the new ISEA/ANSI Z358.1 Standard once
it has gone through the revision and review process. The current ANSI
Z358.1 Standard can be obtained by contacting Cristine Fargo at the
International Safety Equipment Association, cfargo**At_Symbol_Here**safetyequipment.org.
