As campus facilities resources tighten, we have been asked if it is really necessary to flush eyewashes and safety showers weekly. To respond intelligently, we are thinking of taking random samples of eyewash and safety shower water and testing them for the presence of Legionella and Acanthamoeba. We have a variety of these fixtures on campus that are known to have been flushed on different schedules. We're a little discouraged by the cost of the tests ($400/fixture) and we're trying to gauge if other locations have done similar sampling and how useful the resulting information is. I appreciate any information people are willing to share. - Ralph Ralph Stuart, CIH Environmental Safety Manager University of Vermont Environmental Safety Facility 667 Spear St. Burlington, VT 05405 rstuart**At_Symbol_Here**uvm.edu fax: (802)656-5407
