Biological Safety Officer Department of Environment, Health & Safety University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill wishes to hire a Manager of Biological Safety. UNC is a leading research university with rapidly growing research programs in infectious disease, public health, emerging pathogens and vaccine development. Over 200 principal investigators at Carolina use biological hazards, including research with animals. They collaborate with many other investigators worldwide. UNC=92s Manger of Biological Safety will lead the biosafety staff and work within the EHS team to plan and implement a comprehensive biosafety program to support the University's mission of research and teaching. Challenges include risk assessment for infectious agents and biological toxins; review of research proposals to protect employee safety, public health and the environment; training of laboratory personnel in biosafety principles; coordinating activities of the Institutional Biosafety Committee; addressing the risks of new research in select agents and biotechnology; and the broad responsibility to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations pertaining to biological hazards. UNC=92s well-established biological safety program is supported by an occupational health clinic, a comprehensive laboratory inspection program, and on-line training and recordkeeping. An applicant could be successful with a strong background in one of a number of related areas, such as microbiology, infectious disease or molecular biology (recombinant DNA). Knowledge of containment standards and engineering is highly desirable, as is biological safety professional certification. Minimum requirements include Master's degree in industrial hygiene, biological science, microbiology, public health or a related field and at least 5 years of progressively responsible and closely related experience.
