Biological Safety Officer

Department of Environment, Health & Safety

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill wishes to hire a
Manager of Biological Safety. UNC is a leading research university
with rapidly growing research programs in infectious disease, public
health, emerging pathogens and vaccine development. Over 200 principal

investigators at Carolina use biological hazards, including research
with animals. They collaborate with many other investigators worldwide.

UNC=92s Manger of Biological Safety will lead the biosafety staff and

work within the EHS team to plan and implement a comprehensive
biosafety program to support the University's mission of research and

teaching. Challenges include risk assessment for infectious agents and

biological toxins; review of research proposals to protect employee
safety, public health and the environment; training of laboratory
personnel in biosafety principles; coordinating activities of the
Institutional Biosafety Committee; addressing the risks of new
research in select agents and biotechnology; and the broad
responsibility to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations

pertaining to biological hazards. UNC=92s well-established biological

safety program is supported by an occupational health clinic, a
comprehensive laboratory inspection program, and on-line training and

recordkeeping.

An applicant could be successful with a strong background in one of a

number of related areas, such as microbiology, infectious disease or
molecular biology (recombinant DNA). Knowledge of containment
standards and engineering is highly desirable, as is biological safety

professional certification. Minimum requirements include Master's
degree in industrial hygiene, biological science, microbiology, public

health or a related field and at least 5 years of progressively
responsible and closely related experience. The selected candidate
should have good verbal and written communication skills, and good
interpersonal skills.

Interested candidates should apply on-line at
http://hr.unc.edu/jobseekers/
. Please attach resume with cover letter and reference contacts.
