Job Summary: Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety,
the Environmental Affairs Manager has broad responsibilities for Yale Unive
rsity's environmental compliance. This position leads the Yale EHS Environm
ental Affairs Section, including permitting, reporting, recordkeeping and h
azardous waste management. The position directly supervises four employees,
including an environmental operations manager who supervises eight employe
es. Yale has over 50 environmental permits, licenses and registrations, and
annually manages over 800 tons of radioactive, biomedical, universal and o
ther hazardous waste. This position works closely with other EHS employees
who perform inspections and are responsible for safety compliance at our po
wer plants and construction sites. Our Environmental Affairs Manager must p
rovide excellent customer service and establish positive working relationsh
ips with regulatory agencies. This position needs to build, support and be
part of work teams in our multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative offic
e.
Required Qualifications: Eight years or more of progressively responsible e
xperience in a multimedia environmental compliance/management program at a
research university, government research facility, medical research center
or a similar research/higher education work environment. Four years of sign
ificant supervisory and managerial experience. Master's or doctorate degree
in environmental management, environmental science, environmental engineer
ing, public health or other functionally-relevant field. Certification by t
he Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (or an equivalent environmen
tal safety certification) is preferred. Excellent management, writing, spea
king and technical skills are required.
