Indianapolis.

A Laboratory Safety Technician position is currently available with Indiana
 University-Purdue University Indianapolis' (IUPUI) Office of Environmental
 Health and Safety.  The responsibilities of this position include scheduli
ng and conducting comprehensive laboratory safety inspections, performing c
hemical inventories of reportable hazardous chemicals for each laboratory, 
fume hood certifications and testing of emergency equipment.  The position 
requires the use of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Good verb
al and written communication skills are required as well as good organizati
onal and customer service skills. Equipment includes the use of personal co
mputers, automobile (must have valid driver's license), field instruments s
uch as portable anemometers, personal protective equipment, and spill respo
nse equipment.  Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations is desir
able but not required.  The employee must work independently on complex lab
oratory safety programs that involve a variety of laboratory hazards, chemi
cals, products, and advanced computer databases. The individual must intera
ct with a diverse population of highly educated laboratory personnel and mu
st perform their duties competently with self confidence. A high level of a
ccountability and accurate recordkeeping is required to ensure the quality 
of the inspections and chemical data.

IUPUI is an urban research and academic health sciences campus that ranks a
mong the top 15 in the country in the number of first professional degrees 
it confers and among the top 7 in the number of health-related degree.  IUP
UI offers more than 200 academic programs, from associate degrees to doctor
al and professional degree, with 22 schools and academic units which grant 
degrees from both Indiana University and Purdue University.

IUPUI is IU's home campus for state wide programs in medicine, law, dentist
ry, nursing, health and rehabilitation science, and social work and extends
 its program offerings through IUPU Columbus.

The IUPUI campus houses approximately 1000 laboratories with over 29,000 st
udents representing 49 states and 122 countries attending the university.
The campus is just three blocks from the Indiana Government Center, four bl
ocks from Victory Field and the RCA Dome, and adjacent to White River State
 Park; home of the NCAA National Headquarters, the Indiana State Museum, In
dianapolis Zoo, and the Eiteljorg Museum.

A Bachelor's degree is required in one of the physical sciences, life scien
ces, environmental science, applied health science, or other applicable deg
ree with one year laboratory, research or environmental safety experience.
