Responsible for establishing and enforcing all chemical safety standards, including biohazards, in compliance with standards set forth by the college, the EPA, OSHA and other applicable local, state, and federal regulations that pertain to colleges by performing the following duties: Maintains and updates as needed, a usable and specific Chemical Hygiene Plan for the college which designates procedures, control measures, equipment, personal protective equipment and work practices that are capable of protecting employees and students from the health hazards presented by hazardous chemicals used on campus. Works in conjunction with all laboratory instructors and laboratory personnel in order to ensure that the safe and appropriate laboratory procedures are employed for each laboratory course. Writes and updates laboratory procedures to be approved by laboratory instructors and laboratory personnel. Interacts with laboratory instructors and laboratory personnel on a regular basis in a supportive, cooperative manner. Supervises those student workers who report to the CHO by designating work projects, evaluating their activities and approving their time sheets. Provides training, particularly in safety protocols such as handling spills and managing accidents appropriately for laboratory teaching assistants and faculty. Includes blood borne pathogen training. Oversees maintenance of campus chemical inventory lists in accordance with OSHA standards. Develops and maintains central MSDS files and all satellite chemical MSDS files with appropriate updates and additions. Develops computer access procedures to MSD sheets. Oversees proper identification and labeling of chemicals by department personnel. Coordinates waste disposal from all college departments and maintains Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifests as required. Arranges for regular inspections of chemical and emergency equipment. Primary inspections will include science departments, art department, nursing department and the service department (physical plant). Arranges for regular safety monitoring for hazardous activities. Primary monitoring will include theatre department and the service department. Informs the Business Affairs Office of critical inspection and monitoring results for insurance and risk management purposes. Ensures that appropriate action is taken when corrective measures are required to achieve standards set forth by the EPA, OSHA and other applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Attends department meetings as needed. Participates in Safety Committee and other college committees as assigned. Maintains current knowledge of regulations and safety standards applicable to a college environment. Temporary addendum: Assumes a leadership role in arranging and overseeing transportation of chemicals from 60 Collegeview to the new Science facility in 2009. A minimum of two years of training in chemistry, including organic, is required. Knowledge of relevant EPA, OSHA and other applicable local, state and federal regulations highly desirable. Recent directly related experience is strongly preferred; National certification as a CHO is required; Must be knowledgeable of EPA, OSHA and other applicable local, state and federal regulations in regards to chemicals and hazardous materials. Must demonstrate a basic working knowledge of chemicals; Ability to exercise initiative and independent sound judgment in unusual or new situations.
