Are there rules or guidelines for situating an outdoor central accumulation site for hazardous waste? Our Chem dept. has an outdoor storage shed, but it vents approximately 6 feet from the main air intake system for an adjacent lab/classroom building. Originally we were told we couldn't use this shed for hazardous waste due to this ventilation issue, but now we have been told that it is safe to use. But as we have no true EH&S department (we have one person in Risk Management and they have no authority) and no air monitoring program, we are extremely dubious. Is this safe and what kind of tests should have been performed (or should be performed) to verify that it is safe to use? We don't use drums for waste, we use glass bottles. Sincerely, Marjorie Folsom Lake College
