Spreadsheets are designed for number crunching, as in accounting and statistics. Many people use them for other purposes but that does not mean spreadsheets are well suited to those uses. The structure that is designed for doing things like tracking inventory is the database. Look at MS Access, since you have been using Excel. You will need to learn a new range of programming skills, but Access usually comes with several fully developed database examples to help you out. Or take a couple of those courses in Basic and Intermediate Access.
