The electrochemical gas detectors are not entirely interference free 
so sulfuric acid mist or SO2 may have simulated CO. I never saw it 
around batteries, but NOx interfered with the old Ecolyzers (the 
original electrochemical gas instrument) while CO interfered with the 
Enolyzer (a follow on for NOx from the same manufacturer).

Maybe the battery got hot enough to cook organics enough to create CO.
