Director of Environment, Health, and Safety
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is accepting  
applications for the position of  Director of the Department of  
Environment, Health, and Safety.  With 42 employees and an annual  
budget of $4.2 million, the department is responsible for the  
University's comprehensive safety program, including industrial  
hygiene, biological safety, radiation safety, fire safety,  
environmental affairs, workplace safety and training, and workers’  
compensation.

The Environment, Health, and Safety Department operates a Part B  
permitted TSD facility, a LLRW storage-for-decay facility, and an  
employee occupational health clinic.  In addition to serving a campus  
community of 40,000 faculty, staff, and students, including over  
10,000 on-campus residents and over 1 million visitors a year, the  
department manages the radiation safety program as well as  
radioactive and hazardous waste disposal for UNC Hospitals.  Further

The University is in the midst of an 8 year, $1.8 billion renovation  
and construction program that will add about 6 million square feet of  
academic, research, housing, office, parking, and support space to  
the campus.  In addition to the over 750 acre main campus, the  
University is in the process of developing a master plan for a  
satellite campus located about 2 miles north of the main campus on  
about 1,000 acres.   The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill  
is a Research I university with complex research laboratories and  
other operations, including an Airport, a Cogeneration Facility, and  
major public assembly venues that require specialized health and  
safety services.

Required qualifications include a master's degree and 10 years of  
progressively responsible experience in the major areas of  
responsibility.  Strong operational and leadership skills, including  
the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of  
constituencies; a commitment to customer service, employee  
involvement, and diversity; and an excellent regulatory compliance  
track record are desirable.  The position reports to the Associate  
Vice Chancellor for Campus Services in the Finance and Administration  
Division.
