>What is this device and what is it suppose to do? Water hammer like in >condensation induced water hammer in steam systems? From the following web site, where you can see a picture of one of these: http://www.sargentwelch.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_CP76755-00_EA_A_Water+Hammer,+Glass_E_ "This is a demonstration your students will want to see again and again-water inside the vacuum tube falls and sounds like a hammer hitting a nail. The 25cm-long all-glass hammer has a bulb at one end, is filled with water, evacuated and vacuum sealed. The water falls just as a solid would, making a surprising clank as it hits bottom." I've never seen or heard one, but it looks like it should break if you shake it hard. Seems like it ought to be made of plastic.
