I happen to be a Chemist in an Oncology Pharmacy, so I deal with this eve ry day. All hazardous drugs (which includes antineoplastics, some antibi otics, endocrine disruptors, etc) need to be disposed of in your RCRA was te. Any animal bedding, excreta etc should be sterilized then also dispo sed of in your RCRA waste. We also dispose of our monoclonal antibodies as RCRA waste because although these drugs are supposed to be targeted, w e now know that some of them have actions other than what was intended. Since we don't know what effect they may have on aquatic organisms, we er r on the safe side and treat them as hazardous also. I know we've probably covered this before, but I just can't put my hands on the information this morning. A researcher is working with 3 antineoplastic drugs that are also considered hazardous materials/hazardous waste. Naturally, questions arise about disposal of clinical lab trash, animal and animal bits contaminated with these materials, animal bedding, etc. The 3 drugs are cytarabine, methotrexate, vincristine. Is disposal as hazardous waste appropriate or necessary? What about the medical waste potential? The haz waste folks won't take medical waste - the med waste folks won't take haz waste. Help!
