Is it possible that he made tri- iodotoluene? That is simple to make from commonly available lab chemicals. A long, long time ago I made some of that as a college student and accidentally detonated it inside a fume hood. I was lucky because it just knocked my goggles off and I couldn't hear very well for a few minutes afterwards...
