Ralph,

Removing that air foil is a bad, unsafe idea. The purpose of the air
foil is to enhance non-turbulent air flow into the hood. When the air
flow into a hood is turbulent, some fraction, which could be as large as
80 or 90%, or greater, of the toxic fumes and gases that should have
exited out through the venting of the hood now, with turbulence, enter
the room where people are working and breathing the toxic contaminated
air.

Hoods from which those air foils have been removed should NEVER be used
as fume hoods until the air foils are replaced and the hood re-tested to
be sure it is in compliance with the manufacturer's and installer's
specifications.
