People interested in the details of the new EPA lab waste rule may be interested in a webcast that will be offered the afternoon of Wednesday June 14 by NACUBO and CSHEMA. - Ralph http://www.nacubo.org/x8095.xml Performance Based Regulations Proposed for Academic Labs: What You Need to Know 6/14/2006 For more than twenty years, higher education has encouraged and worked with the Environmental Protection Agency to recognize the unique nature of the academic laboratory environment and the challenges colleges and universities face in complying with hazardous waste rules. On May 23, the EPA published a proposed rule defining new, optional standards for management of hazardous waste in academic laboratories. The new rules provide flexibility by allowing institutions to manage unwanted materials in labs in a more efficient manner as described in the institution’s Laboratory Management Plan. Key provisions include allowing institutions greater latitude in the management and labeling of containers in labs, flexibility in determining when and where an unwanted material is a hazardous waste, and additional time for laboratory cleanouts. NACUBO and CSHEMA have invited the EPA to present an overview of the regulations and answer clarifying questions about the proposal. Following the EPA’s presentation, environmental health and safety experts will discuss the practical implications of this new proposed rule.
