I don't remember if I received the e-mail or not, but I would say that
"those who are not against us are for us." If the objective is to
achieve safer, healthier working conditions through training, isn't that
what we all want? (We have this debate periodically in our office.) If
they promoted it under the CHAS name without consulting with the
division, that would be one thing, but it sounds like they didn't do
that.
We could offer to help them with content/cirriculum development, if we
are concerned that the course falls short.

P.S. I get a fair number of e-mails through this list-serve promoting
courses that are not offered or sponsored by ACS. I feel that those
would be even less appropriate than ACS courses.

Hi all -
I am trying to determine if the general CHAS membership received a
recent
email announcement regarding the American Chemical Society Short Course
on
Laboratory Safety and Health. This course is presented by the ACS
Office of
Continuing Education without any input, participation or involvement
from
CHAS.
Personally, I think it is inappropriate for this office to use the ACS
name
and resources to directly compete with the work we do (e.g. workshops
at
regional and national meetings as well as other activities) and also
to
ignore repeated attempts over the years to discuss the situation.
Recently,
in answer to a request, I told them I did not think it was appropriate
to
use the DCHAS email list to promote their materials (but that I would
be
happy to discuss ways to work together in the future). I just received
an
email announcement for the lab safety short course (sent to me, not
the
list) and I am curious if they just went to some internal ACS source
of
emails to get around my request.
For those who are not familiar, the ACS Office of Continuing Education
offers a variety of multi-day "Short Courses", one of which is on lab
safety. I have no comment on the content of the course itself, I am
sure
the presenters are very knowledgeable, but as far as I know they are
not
CHAS members and have never participated in CHAS activities.
Please let me know if you received this announcement, as well as any
thoughts you might have on the situation in general. I plan to raise
this
issue with ACS President Anne Nalley and see if we can't get some sort
of
resolution.
