The EH&S Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has an 
exciting opportunity available for an experienced Laser Safety 
Professional with expert knowledge in the areas of laser and 
non-ionizing radiation safety. Serving as the Laser Safety Officer for 
LBNL, you will independently provide consultation in the areas of laser 
safety, non-ionizing Radiation (NIR) safety, and other EH&S-related 
services to the Berkeley Lab research community. This includes 
independent oversight of all aspects of the Laser Program such as the 
development and implementation of program policies and procedures to 
ensure that all applicable Department of Energy (DOE) orders, regulatory 
requirements, and performance measures are met. Additionally, the 
successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating workplace 
settings for health and safety hazards, recommending effective controls 
and providing technical expertise and field support to customers. The 
incumbent in this position will provide technical leadership to junior 
professional and technician staff and will report to the Industrial 
Hygiene Group Leader.

*Key challenges include: *

· Serve as subject matter expert for laser safety and non-ionizing 
radiation (NIR) and provide expert level advice and consultation to 
internal customers

· Design, develop and implement written comprehensive Laboratory NIR 
safety program; Develop and conduct laser safety and NIR safety training

· Apply expert knowledge of subject matter to review and approve formal 
work authorizations (Activity Hazard Documents)

· Provide guidance and input to researchers to maintain a complete, 
accurate and up-to-date laser inventory Perform and document laser 
safety and NIR safety inspections, surveys and measurements and 
reviewing laser alignment evaluations

· Provide technical guidance for the design, installation, use and 
testing of engineering controls including laser safety interlocks and 
enclosures

· Review and maintain the written Laboratory laser safety program (Pub 
3000 Chapter 16) to be consistent with ANSI Z136.1 - 2000 and DOE policy

· Assist in or lead accident investigations, multi-disciplinary safety 
inspections, self-assessments, and/or committee meetings relating to 
laser safety and non ionizing radiation

· Serve as the primary point-of-contact between the Division Safety 
Coordinator and the EH&S Division; Maintain internal customers’ needs, 
and self-assessment performance data and advise on Integrated Safety 
Management (ISM) Program/Plan implementation

*Qualifications:*

In order to be successful in this position, you'll need a broad level of 
knowledge equivalent to that which would be obtained in an advanced 
degree course of study in one or more of the following disciplines: 
Physics, Safety Engineering, and/or Industrial Hygiene or an equivalent 
combination of relevant academic degree(s) and professional experience 
(e.g., Ph.D. in related field of study and 3 - 5 years of experience; 
M.S. and 5 - 7 years of experience; B.S. and 7 - 10 years of experience).

· Must have expert knowledge and work experience in the detection and 
control of laser and non-ionizing radiation hazards associated with 
technologies in a research environment

· Ability to apply OSHA, DOE, ANSI, and other pertinent federal, state, 
and local regulatory requirements.

· Demonstrated ability and experience in leading an interdisciplinary 
EH&S team and developing and presenting training, briefings and reports

· Demonstrated ability to make recommendations and decisions that affect 
the personal safety, cost, and use of equipment and procedures and 
develop innovative solutions.

· Proven ability to make assessments and interpretations beyond that 
which is currently available through technical or regulatory guidance 
documentation and ability to provide program direction regarding problem 
solving/ investigation processes

· Must have demonstrated ability and success in negotiating and dealing 
with various regulatory organizations.

· Professional certification, registration, or equivalent is highly 
preferred.
