I think ether should be heated with steam or with a heat source where the ignition source (thermostat, switches) is remote from the ether (outside of the hood) like a heating mantel with external controls. With a hot plate, the ignition source is directly in contact with the ether fumes, making a fire quite possible. Reminds me of a certain professor who regularly smoked in the lab while doing extractions with ether. He was always careful to point the separatory funnel away from his cigarette when venting. Luckily, he never had a fire...
