Dan, We are in the process on getting a new NMR and I noticed in the "site preparation" from Varian that they strongly recommend not having carpet. Static buildup apparently can have adverse effects on the homogeneity of the magnetic field. The extent of the effect will depend on how much shielding your magnet has. It might not hurt to run the carpet request by your NMR vendor.
