Just a reminder that on November 23 I posted the exact ANSI wording FYI Subj: Re: [DCHAS-L] safety shower location Date: 11/23/05 To: chemcon**At_Symbol_Here**JUNO.COM The whole quote from ANSI Z358.1-2004 is "....the path of travel shall be free of obstructions that may inhibit the immediate use of the equipment. (See appendix B5)" One line in B5 says: "A door is considered to be an obstruction. Where the hazard is not corrosive, one intervening door can be present so long as it opens in the same direction of travel as the person attempting to reach the emergency equipment and the door is equipped with a closing mechanisms that cannot be locked to impede access to the equipment." So, if there is a possibility that the chemicals that will be used are corrosive, the hallway location is out. If you are only going to use chemicals that are other types of eye hazards (e.g., paints, solvents, etc.) then you need to equip the door with a mechanism that makes it always possible to open it from the inside without unlocking it and the door must open out.
