According to the Gas Data Book, Sixth Edition, from Matheson: Anhydrous HF boils at 19.5 deg C. It is shipped in cylinders under its own vapor pressure of 0.3 psi at 20 deg C. Hydrogen boils at -252.8 deg C. Assume the dimensions of a lecture bottle are 5 cm x 30 cm. This gives a volume of 0.589 liter. Assume one mole of hydrogen is formed in the lecture bottle. Plug these numbers into the ideal gas equation at 20 deg C. PV = nRT P = 40.8 atm or 600 psi That's a huge increase in pressure!!!!
