Greetings,
 According to the website maintained by the American Council of Education
in 1998-99 there were 4070 accredited degree granting higher education
institutions in the U.S.--based upon data from the U.S. Dept of Education.
 Previously, I have heard that there are about 2500 colleges and
universities granting a Bachelor's degree of some sort.  So, I think 4,000
would be a figure a bit on the high side, since the data would include
seminaries and other sorts of institutions.
