Greetings, According to the website maintained by the American Council of Education in 1998-99 there were 4070 accredited degree granting higher education institutions in the U.S.--based upon data from the U.S. Dept of Education. Previously, I have heard that there are about 2500 colleges and universities granting a Bachelor's degree of some sort. So, I think 4,000 would be a figure a bit on the high side, since the data would include seminaries and other sorts of institutions.
