In "Safety in Academic Chemistry Laboratories" ISBN 0-8412-3864-2, p. 3, Published by the American Chemical Society. "Laboratory instructors are responsible for the safety of their laboratory students; no more than 25 should be assigned at the same time to work in a laboratory under the supervision of an instructor." ________________________________ From: DCHAS-L Discussion List on behalf of toth, george Sent: Wed 8/25/2004 1:54 PM To: DCHAS-L**At_Symbol_Here**LIST.UVM.EDU Subject: Re: [DCHAS-L] FW: safe number of students in chemistry lab If this works, this link should take you to a good resource document for general design considerations when it comes to Lab Spaces. It also provides a good list of associated regulations and codes to consider when designing lab spaces. However, your specific situation has to be factored in when assessing the document. http://www.stanford.edu/dept/EHS/prod/mainrencon/Labdesign/Section_1-0_General_Requirements.pdf George M. Our administration asked us to increase the number of students in our introductory chemistry course from 30 to 35. We have enough equipment to handle 5 more students per class. Are there guidelines regarding the number of students it is safe to have in a class? The instructor is the only non student in the class: the lab aid cannot assist in every class because some classes meet at the same time or overlap. We have 6 lab tables 17ft by 2.5ft. The lab tables are separated by 5ft. There is 3ft of space on either side of the tables. I would send for your book on safety but I need an answer as soon as possible. If you have any comments, they would be greatly appreciated. thanks Dr. David Zoller Chair of Physical Science Olive-Harvey College (773)291-6540
