Last week I asked the list what they thought about the eBallot issue raised by ACS. I received 59 responses - 56 were positive YESes, one was a positive NO and two were sort of YES. I also learned a lot of other information that I will respond to in this email. I was hoping to be able to share the reasons for the NO with you, but the responder did not give any, and has not responded to my request for an explanation. Perhaps he will post his reasons to this list. First, I am leaving for the Philly meeting early Wednesday. I will be checking my email and I can be reached by direct email at: neal**At_Symbol_Here**chemical-safety.com I will be checking my email at least twice a day and I will try to answer what ever emails I get. Next, someone asked for how to post to the list ... Send a PLAIN TEXT NO ATTACHMENT email to DCHAS-L**At_Symbol_Here**LIST.UVM.EDU That is all that is needed. Now, some background - Last Marchm DivCHAS approved using eBallots, starting in 2005. It turns out we need to revise our ByLaws to do this, and Eileen Segal, one of our Councillors, has done a good job on that. We will approve the changes in Philly and YOU will be asked to ratify them, with a vote. So - as many of you said, the Division is doing this, regardless of what ACS does. Next, George Wahl, our other Councillor has agreed to set up some students to ferret out our missing email addresses for our Division members. I hope we can get our valid addresses above 90%. Some of you worried about keeping emails current. This is no harder than keeping snail mail addresses current, and YOU must assume responsibility for that. Some of you worried about hacking, and manipulation of results, especially given the size of ACS (159,000 plus). I do not see that as a problem - many businesses use email ballots now, for things like stock proxy votes, Board of Directors, etc. The technology is there and ACS is working on it. For the Division, it will be a bit more dicey, we will use straight email, with a response to the Division Secretary. However, since we only received less than 100 returned snail mail ballots for the last election, I am hopeful this will elict a better response. Some of you worried about cost. Right now we pay to print and mail about 1700 ballots. We will save these costs. We will also be using the list server to distribute Division information. For example, I am asking the Executive Committee for permission to post the Anaheim and Pilly EC minutes to this list, so everyone can become more active in the Division, if you want to do so. I expect that will be approved and I will post those minutes as soon as I receive them. That about exhausts my responses to what I learned from you. I want to thank each of you who responded; getting those emails from you was one of the more enjoyable aspects of this year as DivCHAS Chair. My term continues until 12/31, when I turn it over to Russ Phifer. Thanks for sharing you thoughts with me and for reading all of this ...
