I agree that a course on safety would be beneficial to all students. We wrestled quite a bit with determining the level of the online class and decided to restrict it to science majors who would be doing advanced laboratory work in chemistry and preparing for careers in scientific or related fields. To understand some of the issues of chemical reactivity and toxicology, some background is needed. In a future interation, the ACS might target courses to other groups such as introductory students and high school teachers. It seems to me that the people taking their first chemistry courses are the very ones who need the safety training the most. How many of us could have avoided a dangerous or potentially dangerous incident in those first two years of chemistry if we had had a basic class in chemical safety?
