Donald, There is no regulation that I'm aware of that requires shower drains. Did they quote a citation? I'd be interested to hear the rationale for removing the showers. We have similar installations in many of our laboratory buildings. The cost of retrofitting drains is prohibitive in existing facilities. We have taken the position that we would rather deal with the water on the floor than deny someone the use of the safety shower. Use of full safety showers is a very rare event for us. We do have separate eyewash and drench hose installations in the labs which are mounted at sinks and drain into them, which minimizes the need for the safety shower. Hope you're able to keep your safety showers. Tony Bohn DuPont Safety Consultant Ex Central R&D Safety Manager Wilmington, Delaware "Donald A. We have several showers located in the hallways around our clinical laboratories at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. A State of Wisconsin survey team have sited us for having these showers and not providing drains below the showers. Their recommendation is to put in drains or remove the showers. The UW hospital safety officer in formed me they plan to remove the showers - unless I can find a regulation that would argue in favor of these safety devices. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Seems like we make strides in the right direction and then can quickly retreat! Thanks for any input! Donald A.
