William Hunt, American ceramist, 1946- M.F.A. (ceramics, sculpture), the Ohio State University, 1970. B.A. (philosophy, Žne art), the College of Wooster, 1968. His studio career has produced thirteen major one-man shows since 1968, including exhibitions at Meyer Breier Weiss gallery, San Francisco, and Nagai Gallery, Tokyo. Additionally, his work has been represented in numerous national or international exhibitions and collections. William Hunt's recent ceramics consist of thrown or handbuilt vessels emphasizing somberly glazed surfaces and plasticity, often taking clay to the edge of its ability to support itself during forming. Works by this artist have appeared in publications such as American Craft and Craft International (New York), Ceramic Review (London), Keramik Magazin (Berlin), La Ceramique Moderne (Paris), Ceramica (Madrid), along with a variety of additional art journals, books, video and other media.
William Hunt has juried the major U.S. exhibitions involving ceramics, including the first Virtual Ceramics Exhibition (Internet, World Wide Web), the Westwood Clay National (California), the Marietta Crafts National, the Monarch National (Texas) and Functional Ceramics (Ohio), as well as serving as juror for state arts grants in aid to individual artists programs. He has written widely in the critic's capacity, with article credits throughout contemporary art and craft literature. As an author in the ceramics Želd, William Hunt has published more than 100 exhibition reviews since 1975, writing on a variety of topics from Picasso's ceramics to "What Makes a Pot Beautiful?" He has lectured widely, including presentations at the National Council on Education For the Ceramic Arts (keynote), the American Crafts Council Conference, and the International Academy of Ceramics. From 1972 to 1994, he was on the staff (over the last decade, the Editor) of Ceramics Monthly magazine, an international journal distributed worldwide. In August of last year he left Ceramics Monthly to persue publishing, studio, teaching and consulting interests.
